About the Artwork – The Band Played Waltzing Matilda
Painted on ANZAC Day 2020, The Band Played Waltzing Matilda is my tribute to the courage, sacrifice and enduring legacy of the Australian servicemen and women who have served our country.
Inspired by Eric Bogle's powerful song of the same name, the artwork reflects the experiences of young Australians sent to war, particularly those who fought at Gallipoli during the First World War. The song tells a moving story of youthful optimism, the devastating realities of battle and the lasting physical and emotional consequences of war.
The red poppies honour fallen servicemen and women, while the purple poppies remember the horses, dogs and other animals who served alongside them, often making the ultimate sacrifice.
Through this painting, I honour those who never returned, those whose lives were forever changed by war, and the families who carried the impact of their sacrifices.
Lest We Forget.
Original artwork description and details
'The Band Played Waltzing Matilda'
This painting was painted on ANZAC day 2020 and is named after the Eric Bogle song of the same name. The lyrics to this song are just so powerful and moving:
And I lived the free life of the rover
From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback
I waltzed my Matilda all over
It's time to stop rambling, there's work to be done
So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun
And they sent me away to the war
And the band played Waltzing Matilda
When the ship pulled away from the quay
And amid all the tears, flag waving and cheers
We sailed off for Gallipoli..."
The red poppy symbolises the fallen service men and women, and the purple poppy symbolises the fallen service animals, and their ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
