About the Artwork – I Was Only 19
Painted on ANZAC Day 2018, I Was Only 19 is my tribute to the courage, service and sacrifice of Australian servicemen and women across generations.
The artwork features an old-style military rifle, a powerful symbol of the soldiers who served in conflicts throughout Australia's history. It represents not only the realities of war but also the young men and women who left behind their families, their homes and the lives they knew to serve their country.
The painting takes its name from the iconic song I Was Only 19 by Australian band Redgum. Although the song tells the story of a young soldier's experiences during the Vietnam War, the artwork carries a broader message of remembrance for all those who have served.
Many never returned home, while others carried the physical and emotional effects of war throughout their lives. Their sacrifices, and those of their families, should never be forgotten.
Through this painting, I honour the servicemen, servicewomen and service animals whose courage and dedication are part of Australia's military history.
